Mental disorder and alcohol consumption in students of the National University of Chimborazo (in Spanish)

Abstract

INTRODUCTION. Mental disorders in the university population have had a high incidence rate in recent years; depression and anxiety are common, closely related to alcohol consumption, which deepens this psychosocial problem. TARGET. To analyze the mental disorder and alcohol consumption in students of the National University of Chimborazo. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Descriptive, field, cross-sectional study, with a quantitative approach, with a sample of 125 university students from the first to fifth semester of the Pedagogy of Physical Activity and Sports career at UNACH. The technique used for data collection was the Psychological Reagent, the following were applied: Identification Test of Disorders Due to Alcohol Consumption (AUDIT) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28). The frequency and percentage of the levels of altered mental health and alcohol consumption were calculated and an association analysis between them was performed using the chi-square χ² statistic. RESULTS. 79.2% (99; 125) present a level of mild mental alteration, 72.8% (91; 125) do not reflect problems related to alcohol consumption; an association is found between levels of altered mental health and alcohol consumption. CONCLUSION. It was related to mental disorder and alcohol consumption in students of the National University of Chimborazo. The highest percentage of university students present low levels of altered mental health and absence of alcohol-related problems, however, there is a significant association between the levels of the mentioned variables.
