dc.description.abstract | BACKGROUND: Information on the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and prophylaxis practices in VTE in Ecuador is scarce. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the appropriate use of pharmacological and non-pharmacological thromboprophylaxis according to thrombotic risk in clinical and surgical patients hospitalized at HECAM. METHODOLOGY: Transversal descriptive epidemiological study in hospitalized patients of the Carlos Andrade Marín Hospital in the period February 21 to 23, 2019. RESULTS: The surveys of 373 patients including obstetric patients were analyzed, 186 (53.3%) were admitted to clinical rooms and 163 (46.7%) to surgical rooms. Of these patients, 286 patients (81.9%) were classified as having a high risk of VTE. 144 (88.3%) patients in the surgical rooms and 129 (69.4%) patients in the clinical rooms had a high risk of VTE, receiving adequate pharmacological thromboprophylaxis in 56 (38.8%) surgical patients and 74 (57.4%) medic patients respectfully. INTERPRETATION: The proportion of patients hospitalized in this center and at high risk of venous thromboembolism is high. The compliance rate of the recommended pharmacological and non-pharmacological thromboprophylaxis guidelines in these patient groups is low and far from the ideal standard.
